This is a snapshot of my life. It’s a glimpse into the things that fill not only my time, but my heart.
The time I spend with the people I love is precious. As I’ve been reminded by some folks older than myself, people who have had the chance to see the impact of the way they spend their time over the course of years: in wisdom, we work to live, we don’t live to work. And in this photograph you can get an idea of what I think it looks like to live.
Here I am in the mirror, with friends on either side. I’ve a carrot in my mouth, which is my road trip snack of choice. I’m in my friend’s parents’ home in the Houston area, and while it isn’t a place I’d want to live, it is a true blessing to visit an unfamiliar place with familiar people. I was there for them, and little other reason. Travel, as romanticized as it is, outside of the influence of people and culture and love, is devoid of deep meaning for me, and devoid of satisfaction. But with friends, I can spend time even in a concrete jungle surrounded by cold angular walls, and still feel the light of God shining upon me.
What a joy, to live with love and friendship, to have profound and deep conversation with like minds, and to laugh at raspberries and dogs with silly haircuts, and enjoy the simple frivolity of everyday existence in the world. There is darkness all about us, certainly, but oh, how much greater is the Light.
I pray Thee, O God, that You would open our eyes to the light, and show us Your glory in the profound, in the simple, and in the silliest of moments.
